KEN IKEDA – TZUKI [moon] (CD by Touch)
Any relation to the other Ikeda? It’s rather like the surfeit of artists
in this business named “Whitehead”. And the (nearly) patented Wozencroft
sleeve stares inscrutably into Easter Island space. A dulcet series of
tones animates dead air and it’s fuck music at it’s most tender. One day
there will be fields of relaxation chambers from which these sounds will
emanate. A pouring-out of water tapes methodically at the tones.
A backwards reflection now, running against a grain of a lonely chime. An
echoing steel sings in quicklime quick-time and is associating sound with
images a kind of hysteria? Mass or otherwise? Bird sings in a reflective
way and the tones procede in a devotional way that is conducive to
afterfuck glowing. A chill – out. The bird’s wing moves oddly slowly and
this is what it sounds like to levitate. (DC)
Miss you, babe.

MARINEVILLE – REDPATH HOUSE (CD by Universal Egg)
And breathing on the compact disc revealed secreted patterns, that, like
feeble and vague critique, vanish into the oblique just as quickly.
Some film noir horns, and then the sizzling electronics. Vibes, man. And
woman, calling from the shimmering plastic. “The revolution…” – and so
on, and soon. Drum and bass – in all their ethnic acid and varieties –
fall heavily but not clumsily. Videogame: optional. Varying levels of
calm seep from the blue-and-green of the cover to the charm of the record
and versa-vice. The pending, pensive stir of universe kicks up cosmic dust
amid the kosmische. An indistinct voice orbits their 8th planet, heralding
a wowie dawn and a mystery rumble… (DC)

ANGUS MCLAURIN – GLASS MUSIC (CD by Bubblecore)
Angus Mclaurin is a piano tuner, pipe organ builder, music teacher and he
just released his first solo CD. Like the title suggests, he uses glass,
fine tuned glass, to produce his music. He records them on five different
reel to reel tape machines and then mixes them. It’s unclear wether he
produces loops or that everything is made in real time. The nine pieces
breath a calm atmosphere, everything turns slowly and peacefully.
Sometimes, such as in ‘Fugue’, it sounds like a gamelan orchestra. Even
when it’s nice mood music, I found some tracks dragging on a bit too much,
even for ambient music of this kind of experimental nature. A little bit
more edit couldn’t have harmed the overal result. Now it’s merely a nice
background music CD. (FdW)

KID 606 – GQ ON THE EQ (CD by Tigerbeat6)
DAT POLITICS – SOUS HIT (CD by Digital Narcis)
In a short time span, Kid 606 became a star in the microcosmos of current
laptopwave. But he released records (and we mean vinyl here) before, which
now finds it’s way to CD. This one collect his various recordings for the
excellent 555 Recordings label: a 10″, three 7″s and two pieces from the
sessions for the 10″. Because of these formats, tracks are relatively short
(from 1 to 5 minutes). Kid 606 here is more rough edged then on his “PS I
Love You” album, but he’s not just playing scratchy rhythm music. He shows
his talent in melancholical bits, such as ‘Dandy’, with it’s phase shifting
loop as the constant factor. Children’s playground of future popmusic.
Dat Politics likewise acquired a name of their own, mainly with a
superstart with releases for Fat Cat and A-Musik. Dat Politics have a very
recognizable sound: weird sounds kick off the track, followed by a fast
rhythm and almost childlike melodies. Then there is a break and the outro.
Very much like popmusic, which I am sure Dat Politics play (even to a wider
extent then Kid 606). This new CD (with a running time just over 35
minutes… that’s a bit too short me think) is no different: ten short
tracks of screams open up here and for it’s inclusion here I have no guess
and then there are ten normal pieces following the above recipy. Great
stuff, but I wonder what’s next for them? (FdW)

DRONAEMENT – DEEPDIVE DRONE (CDR by Nauze Musik)
DRONAEMENT – CROP CIRCLE (Cassette by Darkness)
Dronaement is one Marcus Obst from Germany and his has chosen his name with
great care. The three tracks on his CDR are called ‘Deep’, ‘Dive’ and
‘Drone’, and each uses a single instrument, a Doepfer MS 404, Kog Poly Six
and harmonium. Apperentely these tracks were made for an exhibition in a
tunnel. Three very long, minimal pieces with very subtle changes. My
favourite is ‘Drone’, which is shifting very slowly and has a lighter tone,
but still with a sacred feel to it.
Why release a cassette, if you can release a CDR? I don’t know.
Dronaement’s tape release is not quite more of the same. On the a-side
there are vaguely hints of techno rhythms mixed in, but on the whole it
seems less focussed to me. (FdW)
