LAURENT PERNICE -SEPT AUTRES CREATURES (CD by Odd Size)
Pernice is one of those name I came across a few times, without knowing what
kind of music he makes. So I can’t tell if this new album is representative for
his previous music. On this new CD he seems to be under the influence of two
German guys that work on this too: C. Schulz lends his oboe and Marcus
Schmickler arranged and produced this CD. Logically one thinks that Pernice’s
music sounds similar to POL (a band with both these German guys) and Marcus’
solo CD (and both CD’s on Odd Size!) .The CD opens with ‘Matichore’ , and the
pulsating rhythm, sounds and voices come off as a new Orb track (this is
positive!) .Most of the tracks have some sort of beat to them, but also some of
them sound to fragmentary to be a real song or to be real house music. But
overall this is a well-entertaining CD.

PIERRE ANDRE ARCAND (CD by Ohm)
The second CD by a Canadian sound poet, who is still not very known. His work
differs from many other soundpoets in that he uses tape-loops and/or samplers
that create a repeating character. But this doesn’t get smooth, as the decay of
sound plays quite an important role in the work of Arcand. Some of the work on
this CD has been released before on compilations or hard to get 7″ records, so
now it’s available to a bigger audience.

DIMOSIOYPALLILIKO RETIRE -IANUS (CD by Harsh Dept.)
Interesting concept. This CD contains three tracks. The first two should be
transmitted at the same time on the radio, so that people will switch back and
forth between the two stations. Hence the title: Ianus was the roman god with
two faces, one looking to the old year and one to new year (the month January
stems from this) .How this will sound you can hear on the third track. Vaguely I
remember hearing previous music by this band, but I am not sure how that
sounded. To this CD there is a classical approach. In the first piece it is a
rather repetitive piano tune. The minimal character of this piece is quite o.k.
The second track with its crumbling voices and improvised sounding wind
instruments didn’t appeal to me very much. So, I should conclude with what is
common expression: interesting concept, music so so.

MAEROR TRI -MYEIN (CD by ND)
Third CD from this German band who have a growing reputation for playing
industrial music in an ambient way (or the other way around?) .According to them
it is music to affect the unconsciousness. Normally I get a little suspicious
when someone says this. But knowing Maeror Tri’s honest intentions, I know
better. They play three long tracks. The first one builds from virtual silence
to offensive harshness. The second tracks flows nicely on one volume level. The
last track (with it’s over 40 minutes playing time) shows great similarity with
the last track of Zoviet France’s ‘What Is Not True’ : long drones with
sometimes metallic sounds. Great music that takes time away, and maybe makes
your head flow. Combine this with the triangle package and you get an excellent
product. Address: <plunkett@nd.org>
KEIJI HAINO -A CHALLENGE TO FATE (CD by Les Disques Du Soleil Et De L’Acier)
To some Mr. Haino is a god-like person of improvised noise music, but I find
some of his music of great interest and some is quite boring. This CD with live
recordings in Europe from three back has some of his more interesting work. The
CD opens with an excellent scream piece. Most of the other pieces have guitar
pieces with occasional vocals. Sometimes loud, but at other times quite
atmospheric. As a total, this CD did more for me then his previous CD on
Streamline.
