NOCTURNAL EMISSIONS -IMAGINERY TIME (LP by Soleilmoon Recordings)

Limited to exactly 404 copies, pressed in clear vinyl with expensive Japanese
paper: this is bound to be a collectors item (maybe that explains some of the
high price?) .Nocturnal Emissions are around for some 15 years now, and they
shifted from extreme industrial noise, to, probably, one of the first industrial
bands experimenting with dance music to (maybe again) integrating ambient into
the industrial field. Their latest CD ‘Binary Tribe’ show some change: the NE
side of ambient things in combination with rhythms, which some called housy,
other thought were too weak to be dance music at all. In some ways ‘Imaginary
Time’ continues ‘Binary Tribe’, yet the rhythm part comes off much stronger.
Still this is a combination of their previous, more ambient phase, but it is
much more coherent then ‘Binary Tribe’ . Address: <soleilmoon@aol.com>

TOTAL -EXPLODED STAR SAD SERVANT (CD by Self Abuse)

Total is the name adapted by Matthew Bower, who works solo under this name and
who is a group member of Skullflower. Skullflower, as well as many other groups
from the UK, operate in that field of noise oriented guitar, yet avoiding rock
music’s clichés. Bower’s solo stuff on the three long tracks on this are densely
layered feedback drones (guitars and shortwaves) , in which one still recognizes
the guitar. In all quite an intense affair. This is the type of noise, to which
some say: you either like it or hate it. Address: <sarecords@aol.com>

DOCUMENT 02: SINE (CD by Dorobo)

Dorobo belongs to one of my favourite labels: good quality packaging and
interesting music (even though not always my taste) are building a good
catalogue of music. Document 01 had many Australian musicians working in the
field of dance music (going in several directions) .02 is different. Included
are several Japanese musicians from the area of Spiral Records/CCI. Ryoji Ikeda
>pens the CD with some of his shortwave/synthesizer stuff, but not in an over
:he top industrial way, but intensely minimal. Ikeda is also a member of Dum
rype, who have 3 tracks on this CD. Their interest goes more into rhythmical
structures. The final three tracks are by Yoshio Ojima and Satsuki Shibano: ;oft
tinkling piano music with ditto voices. As you can see a variety of interests
here, that enables you to experience Japanse music that is different then the
ones we usually have in these Vital lines and hopefully a good introduction to
Spiral Records.

JORGE REYES -TONAMI (CD by NO-CD)

Jorge Reyes becomes more and more popular. His mixes of ambient music synths
with ethnical instruments proof to be influential to others (like Steve Roach or
Vidna Obmana) .He plays traditional instruments and learned chanting. Also he
bodily percussion. So far so good, but this new CD (which clocks in at under 40
minutes) does not necessarily adds much new things to many of his previous CD’ s
.
So it’s good, but we want some innovation here!
